Understanding the New Support at Home Program

On 1 November the Australian government introduced the Support at home program. This new model is designed to make it easier for older Australians to access the support they need to stay independent at home for longer.

To receive these services, you need to be assessed through My Aged Care. You can request assessment through My Aged Care or by calling 1800 200 422.

Under Support at Home, support is grouped into three areas:

Clinical – nursing, allied health and other health-related services. The government covers the cost for these services.

Independence – transport, respite, group social support and more. You may receive a fee for some these services.

Everyday Living – domestic assistance, meal preparation, home maintenance and similar services. You may receive a fee for some these services.

Our Support at Home Package Services guide outlines the services we provide and the associated fees.

There are eight levels of funding, based on your assessed needs, ranging from $11,000 to $78,000 per year (equivalent). Instead of an annual package, you will receive a quarterly budget and only pay for the services you actually use. Up to $1,000 or 10% of your quarterly budget, whichever is higher can be carried forward each quarter. Care management fees are capped at 10%.

Additional care can also be offered across three additional pathways:

A Restorative Care Pathway - Up to 16 weeks of restorative care designed to help you stay independent for longer, with access to a team of allied health professionals.

The Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme – Access funding up to $15,000 for home modifications and $15,000 (or more with evidence) for assistive technology. You will be provided equipment, products and home modifications that have been assessed as helpful for your day-to-day needs.

An End-of-Life Pathway - dedicated support to help you remain at home and access the services you need during the final three months of life.

Contributions are an essential part of the Support at Home Program. Your personal financial situation will guide how much you contribute. People entering the program for the first time may contribute more than those transitioning from the current system. There is a lifetime cap on contributions of $130,000, once this has been reached you will not be charged more.

‘No Worse Off’ Principle Contribution Rates

If you are already receiving a Home Care Package on or before 12 September 2024, the ‘no worse off’ principle means you will not pay more than you do now.
With the introduction of Support at Home, costs are now bundled into one hourly rate as shown in the table above. Throughout this process, CHT staff are here to support you with up-to-date information and guidance.
