Meet Rabin, Extended Care Assistant at Snug Village
Rabin joined us in January 2022 during the COVID-19 lockdowns. As an Extended Care Assistant (ECA), he plays a vital role in supporting residents at Snug Village.
"My role is about helping residents here at Snug," Rabin shares. "When I first started, I did a few shifts at Hawthorn, but now I’m based at Snug and feel very familiar with the site. I usually work mornings, waking our residents, helping them shower, and preparing them for their daily activities."
Rabin also steps up to relieve Kathy, the Care Coordinator, during her holidays—a role he has embraced as a valuable learning opportunity. "It was great experience for me. I took on tasks like rostering, supporting ECAs, handling documentation, and managing monthly and quarterly responsibilities. I’ve done this for up to two months at a time and whenever needed."
For Rabin, building connections with residents is the most rewarding part of his job. "Some of the residents are so close to me now. Sarie, for example, feels like a grandmother to me. When I got married back in my home country, she made a card for my wife. It’s wonderful because I don’t have a grandma, but now I have her. Another resident, Janice, calls me ‘Rabbit’ because of my smile. What started as work has become like family."
Originally from Nepal, Rabin moved to Australia in 2015, spending six years in Sydney before settling in Tasmania. "The climate here is similar to back home — I love the cold so it works for me!"
Rabin also cherishes the supportive environment at CHT, particularly the guidance he’s received from Kathy. "I see Kathy as my work mum. She always says, 'If you have any problems, come to me.' She notices if I’m feeling off and makes sure I know I can talk to her. I really appreciate her and our village manager, Denise, who is always there to help. Christian Homes feels like more than just a workplace—it’s a family."
